話民(著)「マザー・テレサ」を読みました。漫画によるマザー・テレサの伝記です。セリフなどはすべて英語で、欄外に日本語訳が書かれています。
マザー・テレサは1910年（明治43年）に現在のマケドニア（当時はオスマン帝国領）で生まれ、1928年（昭和3年）にアイルランドでロレト修道女会に入り、1929年（昭和4年）にコルカタの聖マリア学院で教師となり、1948年（昭和23年）からスラム街での活動をはじめ、1979年（昭和54年）にノーベル平和賞を受賞し、1997年（平成9年）に亡くなられました。
この本を読んで、敬虔なクリスチャンの信仰心が少しわかったように思いました。この本の英語のセリフはマザー・テレサの言葉をそのまま使っているところが多いのでしょうか、心に深く響く言葉が多かったです。やはり人は深いところでこそつながり合うことができるんだなと思いました。
印象に残ったセリフを以下に引用します。
I have found the paradox that if I love until it hurts, then there is no hurt, but only more love. (p.11)
私はこんな逆説を発見しました。もし心が痛むほどに愛すれば、痛みは消え去り、さらなる愛だけが残ります。When you decide to embark on a decision and you get a sense of joy from it, this is a sign from God telling you that He is leading you. (p.22)
何かを決意した時、深い喜びをともなうものなら…、それは神様の思し召しなんだよ。You will comprehend God's wishes when you pray in silence. (p.29)
沈黙して祈ることで神様が何をお望みか知ることができる。You are serving God when you serve the hungry and those in poor health. (p.80)
